Search Engine Marketing

The role of Search Engine Marketing

Every day more and more Australians are using the Internet to find goods and services.

So how do you lead people to your business website?

Well there are several factors in successful online marketing.

One of the most important components is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
However SEO work can take 6-9 months to take full effect.
This is where Search Engine Marketing (SEM) comes into play.

What is Search Engine Marketing?

When you perform a Google search, you may have noticed some listings at the top and side of the page, usually in a different coloured panels. These are paid advertisements ... and that...essentially....is what SEM is - paid listings.

How does it work?

To obtain a paid listing you have to bid for a certain search term.
Every time someone clicks on your paid listing, you get charged your bid price. You also have a say on how much you spend each day.
This is known as Pay Per Click advertising and is available on Search Engines such as Google.
The more popular your search term, the more you will have to pay. For example the search term "Financial Services Sydney", will be far more expensive than "Snow Skis Darwin".

Is it worth it?

As a general rule, we don't suggest SEM for our client's online marketing strategy.
Research has shown that more people use 'organic' listings (unpaid) than paid listings.
And it can prove to be expensive.
So we believe it is more cost effective to improve 'organic' listings using SEO.

There's always a 'but'

The exception to our general rule, is the use of SEM in the early stages of an SEO program.
If you need online exposure fast, SEM is a way of ensuring your website is seen, until the effects of your SEO program kicks in.
